Musical musings for reflection

Money, Money, Money

on September 4, 2012

Woo hoo! Yeah!

I have exactly $1.27 in my checking account, $.40 in my savings account and $5 in cash. That has to last me until Friday. Awesome, right?  The $5 in cash is set aside in case I have an emergency (LOL!) – because that will totally help me in a pinch.

So, of course, that brings me to the subject of songs about money. The one that comes to my mind is the Abba song:

Money Money Money.

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain’t it sad

And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That’s too bad

In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn’t have to work at all, I’d fool around and have a ball…

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man’s world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man’s world
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It’s a rich man’s world

A man like that is hard to find but I can’t get him off my mind
Ain’t it sad

And if he happens to be free I bet he wouldn’t fancy me
That’s too bad

So I must leave, I’ll have to go
To Las Vegas or Monaco
And win a fortune in a game, my life will never be the same…
[ Lyrics from: ]

Of course, I would need money to be able to go to Vegas or Monaco (or even to the local casinos, for that matter). And what good would that do anyway? People out there are winning the lottery, just to file for bankruptcy a few years later…

It seems like there is an endless list of songs involving all sorts of money:

  • Taxes – The Taxman: The Beatles
  • Gambling – Viva Las Vegas: Elvis
  • Robbery – Take the Money and Run: Steve Miller Band
  • Prostitution – None of Your Business: Salt-N-Pepa
  • Homelessness – Another Day in Paradise: Phil Collins
  • Unemployment –  Get a Job: The Offspring

Too bad “Money Makes the World Go ‘Round”. It would be nicer if we had more time to focus on other things. How did the world become such a expensive place?
